Hip and sophisticated, Little Italy is Toronto's splash of Europe along College Street West. Always alive with people, the area boasts a dizzying array of cool cafes, unique shops and good restaurants.

With over half a million people of Italian descent, Toronto has many Italian neighbourhoods, but none is better known than Little Italy.

The area's chic appeal is a long way from the welcome that awaited Toronto's early Italian immigrants who began arriving around 1900. Many of these people lived in cramped conditions in West Toronto Junction at Dundas and Keele, or in the Ward neighbourhood at Queen Street West and Bay Street. Early Italian immigrants found work on the railroads and in road construction, and despite discriminatory immigration policies their numbers increased steadily into the 1920s. In those years, several Italian communities solidified with one of the most prominent being centred around College Street West and Grace Street. The Italians bought up the affordable Victorian homes vacated by the suburb-seeking Anglo-Saxon population, and within a few years, Italian businesses had taken over along College Street.
